Whenever You Can,
Get Outside, Enjoy Sunlight and Nature…
Researchers are saying that we crazy humans are spending 95%
of our time indoors! This goes against our natural instincts
to be outside and surround ourselves with fresh air, trees, mountains,
streams and most importantly sunlight. The stale recycled air
of your home or office is not conducive to your health and you
are missing the benefits of Vitamin D.
"Canadians don't get enough UV light between October
and March to produce adequate levels of Vitamin D."
- Dr. David Hanley
Some experts are finding that we are actually deficient in
this very important vitamin.
Vitamin D is one of the fat soluble vitamins that we require
in our body for improving our bone health, enhancing our mental
health, improving our heart health, preventing certain cancers,
alleviating skin disorders and decreasing our risk of autoimmune
disorders.
You may notice that you get a little stir crazy if you don't
see the sun regularly. Imagine the people living in our northern
communities that actually have no sunlight for part of their
winter. Seasonal Affective Disorder or SAD is becoming more
and more common in our society. Anxiety, depression and just
plain grouchiness can all be caused by the lack of Vitamin
D in your life.
So, what do you do about it?
- First things first, get outside. Even 20 minutes of
natural sunlight a day will help us. If you are in longer
sun exposure a sunscreen of at least SPF 15 is recom mended
against burning.
- Take a Vitamin D supplement – it is fat soluble
so no more than 1,000 International Units per day.
- Eat Vitamin D rich foods: “oily” fish, salmon,
mackerel, etc.
- Drink milk fortified with Vitamin D

Question: I have heard that whether I jog
1 kilometer or walk 1 kilometer I will burn the same number
of calories. Is this true?
Answer: Yes, is the short answer.
When you move a mass over the same distance the energy
expenditure will equal out. Jogging does have additional
benefits to the heart and lungs, but for calorie burning
and weight loss goals a brisk walk will do the trick!
