Stress and the Sledge Hammer!
Why does swinging and smashing a sledge- hammer feel so good?
I am not sure if you are like me, but whenever I hear a radio
promotion for swinging a sledge hammer at an innocent wrecked
car for charity I get a spine tingling sensation. Though a
tad disturbing, I am intrigued at the same time.
What is this strange attraction and why does it feel so good?
Do we imagine that it is our micro-managing boss? Our teenager
who is wreaking havoc, or our toddler who keeps asking…’why?’ These
all conjure some vivid, stressful images, but the truth is
that our innate fight or flight stress response is in action
during this primal act of swinging out. It definitely relieves
tension, increases the heart rate and is better than yelling,
swearing or hurting anyone. Just keep your energy focused on
the wall or the charity event– not your boss
or your own car.
Doing physical labor is an amazing stress reliever. I am realizing
that as a society we have more and more physical labor activities
done for us. I believe that this is contributing to our unhealthy,
coping mechanisms such as smoking and over-eating. We are not
capitalizing on obvious physical outlets to alleviate the stressors
of the day.
Today in my neighborhood the streets are lined with landscaping
trucks. They mow, trim, weed and pull – while we sit
at desks. We don’t see people out washing their cars
on the weekends, or walking or washing their dogs, or just
running around with their kids. We hire all of these jobs out
and we rush our kids to their soccer game then sit and watch,
or work on our blackberry. Wat is going on?
I used to love washing the car on a Sunday afternoon – the
hose, the soap, the fun music, the satisfaction of doing a
great job. I have had my dogs groomed until I really started
to focus on the sledge- hammer and the jobs we don’t ‘do’ any
more. So I had my godson’s over and we washed the dogs
and we had a blast. We spent time together and the dogs loved
the rub down.
I encourage you to try to do some kind of physical labor this
month – something that you currently hire out or just
don’t have time to do – make it a priority. Get
a sledge hammer and swing or grab a shovel and dig! Please
send me an e-mail and let me know what you did and how you
felt. You may find muscles that you thought were long gone – I
know I did. I am totally enjoying physical exertion, amazing
sleep and the added benefit of stress relief – give it
a try.
I want you to know that I have just acquired a chain saw.
I have been dreaming about this stress tool as well, but I
have been cautioned to not take my leg off – good advice.
